Grep Text filters a block of lines by a pattern, either keeping the lines that match or inverting the test to keep the rest. It is the browser version of the command people already know: paste a log, a list or a file, choose literal text or a JavaScript regular expression, and get back only the lines that matter. Literal mode escapes every special character, so a dot means a dot; regex mode gives you anchors, character classes and groups, with a compile error reported rather than a silent failure. Matching is case-sensitive by default and can be made insensitive with one checkbox. The page is explicit about its scope. The test is per line, so a pattern cannot span two lines, and only whole lines are returned - it does not extract capture groups or highlight the matching fragment. It is the tool for pulling errors out of a log, narrowing a list by a naming convention, and checking which lines contain a pattern before editing them. Literal mode escapes every regex metacharacter, so searching for a version string such as 1.2.3 does not treat the dots as wildcards. Regex mode compiles the pattern once and reports a syntax error before filtering, which is easier to diagnose than an empty result. An empty result is a valid answer, not an error, and the kept count makes that distinction visible.

How to use Grep Text

  1. Paste the lines to search.
  2. Enter a literal pattern or a regular expression.
  3. Copy the filtered lines or clear to start over.

What you get

  • The matching lines, or the non-matching lines when inverted.
  • Counts of kept and total lines.
  • A validation error for an invalid regular expression.

When to use Grep Text

  • Keep only error lines from a pasted log.
  • Find lines that match a naming convention with a regex.
  • Drop lines containing a known noise string by inverting the filter.

Frequently asked questions about Grep Text

Can a pattern match across lines?

No. Each line is tested on its own, so a multi-line expression cannot match.

Which regex syntax is used?

JavaScript regular expressions. Lookbehind works in current browsers, but GNU grep-specific syntax does not.

Does it extract capture groups?

No. It only keeps or drops whole lines; use Find and Replace for substitutions.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Filtering runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored.
