Remove Lines Containing filters a block of text by a word or phrase: either drop every line that contains it, or keep only the lines that do. That single control covers two common jobs that look different but share the same question. Dropping is the cleanup pass - removing a log level, a country code, or every line mentioning a discontinued product. Keeping is the extraction pass - pulling all the error lines out of a long log, or narrowing a mixed list to one category. Matching is a literal substring test on each line, so a phrase is found wherever it appears inside a line, and a word is not required to stand alone. Case sensitivity is a checkbox rather than an assumption. Nothing spans a line break, the phrase is not interpreted as a regular expression, and line endings normalise to LF. The result reports how many lines were removed and how many survived, which makes an over-broad phrase visible immediately. It is the tool for trimming a noisy export, isolating one category from a list, and checking whether a term appears before you delete anything. A phrase that occurs twice on one line removes the line once, because the decision is per line rather than per occurrence. The count reports lines, not matches.

How to use Remove Lines Containing

  1. Paste the lines and type the phrase to match.
  2. Choose remove-matching or keep-matching, and whether case matters.
  3. Copy the filtered text or clear to start over.

What you get

  • LF line endings and untouched content on every surviving line.

When to use Remove Lines Containing

  • Keep only the lines containing an error code before sending them on.
  • Drop all rows mentioning a discontinued product from a pasted list.

Frequently asked questions about Remove Lines Containing

Does it match whole words only?

No. It is a substring test, so the phrase matches anywhere inside a line. Enter a longer phrase or surrounding text to narrow the match.

Can I use a regular expression?

No. The phrase is literal; characters such as dots and brackets stand for themselves. Use Find and Replace with regex when a pattern is required.

What happens to empty lines?

They are treated like any other line: an empty line contains no phrase, so it is removed in remove-matching mode and dropped in keep-matching mode as well.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Filtering runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored.
