Remove Unwanted Characters deletes characters from text in one of two ways. Custom mode takes a literal set you supply - a quote mark, a hash, a pipe, a stray zero-width space - and removes every occurrence of those characters while leaving everything else alone. Non-alphanumeric mode does the opposite: it keeps only Unicode letters and digits, optionally preserves whitespace, and deletes the rest, which is the fast way to turn punctuation-laden copy into a plain token. The page is explicit about what the modes mean. The custom list is a set of characters, not a pattern, so a typed backslash does not start an escape and a dot means a dot rather than any character. The alphanumeric mode understands Unicode, so accented Latin, Arabic, Hebrew and CJK letters count as letters and are kept; the result is not silently reduced to ASCII. Whitespace disappears by default in that mode and can be preserved with one checkbox. It is the tool for stripping separators before an import, removing invisible characters that break a comparison, and keeping only the words and numbers from a scraped line. Everything runs locally.

How to use Remove Unwanted Characters

  1. Paste the text and choose custom or non-alphanumeric mode.
  2. For custom mode, type the exact characters to delete.
  3. Copy the cleaned text or clear to start over.

What you get

  • The text with the chosen characters, or all non-alphanumeric characters, removed.
  • A count of characters actually deleted.
  • Everything not targeted left in its original order.

When to use Remove Unwanted Characters

  • Delete quote marks, pipes and other separators from a pasted column.
  • Strip invisible zero-width characters that make two strings compare unequal.
  • Keep only letters and digits from a scraped line, preserving spaces if wanted.

Frequently asked questions about Remove Unwanted Characters

Can I remove a range or a pattern?

No. Custom mode removes the exact characters you type, one by one. Use Find and Replace with a regex pattern if you need pattern matching.

Does non-alphanumeric mode remove accented letters?

No. It keeps any Unicode letter or digit, including accented Latin, Arabic and CJK characters. It removes punctuation, symbols and whitespace unless whitespace is preserved.

How do I remove a space?

Paste a space into the custom character field, or use non-alphanumeric mode with 'keep whitespace' switched off.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The filtering runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server or stored.
